UPDATE: Save our pubs action plan
I have published an action plan for my Save Our Pubs campaign, explaining how you can help by contacting your local councillor and backing the emergency measures proposed to support local businesses.
Earlier this month I hosted a series of meetings with local pubs and businesses and I have written to the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, not just calling on her to scrap the hike, but asking for clarity on the Government’s apparent U-turn on business rates.
Locally the work still continues, calling on our local councillors to back emergency support for the businesses most affected.
What’s happening locally…
Residents and local businesses are backing our campaign. The IMMEDIATE ask is for emergency support from local councils. If we don't move quickly businesses may be lost forever.
Councillors at South Oxfordshire District Council voted to back our motion in December - but now we need to keep the pressure on to ensure they actually deliver!
Councillors at Vale of White Horse District Council will debate a motion calling on them to back local pubs at a meeting on Wednesday 11th February. We're calling on local residents and businesses to contact their local councillor to encourage them to back the plan.
What’s happening nationally…
You may have seen reports that the Government is going to back down on these plans - but don't be fooled, this is only a partial U-turn!
It is not clear whether any changes will relate to all pubs, or just those worst affected. It may only help pubs but not make any difference for hotels. Pubs with rooms may also lose out as a result.
There is no indication that the change in policy will do anything to help retailers and other high street businesses also affected. Matthew Barber has written to the Government seeking clarification on these plans.
